Pattern Drafting

Pattern Drafting

Pattern drafting in fashion design is the process of creating a pattern for a garment by taking measurements from a person, model, or form. The pattern is a blueprint for the garment that is used to cut the fabric and sew it into a finished garment.

Here are some steps in the pattern drafting process:

  • Measurement: Take the correct measurements to build the pattern.
  • Detailing: Create different collar types, for example, for T-shirts.
  • Materials: Select materials for the desired fit.
  • Paper drafting: Draft the paper pattern.

Pattern drafting is an essential part of the fashion industry, as it bridges the gap between designing and constructing garments. The pattern takes into account the type of fabric, the intended fit, and any trims that will be used.

Another method for creating a pattern is draping, which involves placing a piece of fabric around a form to create a three-dimensional pattern. This method allows the designer to see the overall design effect before cutting and sewing the garment.
